ISTE #5 ENGAGE IN PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND LEADERSHIP
ISTE #5A
PARTICIPATE IN LOCAL AND GLOBAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES TO EXPLORE CREATIVE APPLICATIONS OF TECHNOLOGY TO IMPROVE STUDENT LEARNING.

PROJECT SUMMARY

During a nine-month period, I collaborated with three other members of my Leadership Corvallis Class to design, work with, and evaluate a social media strategy that would engage younger audiences online and on site at the Benton County Historical Museum. The goal was to help children and teenage students learn more about the history of their community. Students shared images of themselves on social media with messages about what they had learned.

  • Screen clipping of the hypothesis.is annotation tool.
  • Assignment instructions directing students to use the hypothesis.is tool to annotate two websites.
  • Animated gif tutorial showing students how to use the hypothesis.is tool to annotate images individually and as a group.

PROJECT SUMMARY

Created a virtual fieldtrip for an online course using the Hypothesis.is tool. Students used the tool to explore and annotate sources. The sources became part of the group conversation about evaluating credibility and avoiding plagiarism. Following the course, more than a few students remarked that this was one of their favorite parts of the course. The tool seemed to boost motivation among students. Another interesting response was that the tutorial for the tool helped to produce a guided response from students that required them to follow steps. The use of the mouse to click on and navigate website materials further activated the students’ psychomotor domain as they used cues to apply the steps to different environments in order to produce annotations. The process for annotating assignments and papers was similar to the steps for this Hypothesis.is assignment. As a result, students demonstrated higher levels of competency on future, individual research assignments. Within this course, we also launched a collaborative textbook originally developed by faculty and revised each semester by students.
